The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is due for a major redesign for the 2018 model year. Like its iconic stablemate, the 2-door Wrangler, some important changes in technology appear to be in store for its latest generation. However, initial order guides indicate that FCA will continue selling the previous version right alongside it.

Although the updated “JL” style is expected to be sold as the 2018 Wrangler Unlimited, Jeep will continue selling the previous “JK” version, at least to start, as a 2018 model. This could result in confusion, but it wouldn’t be unprecedented— the automaker did something similar earlier this year with the redesigned Compass.

Under the hood, a revised version of FCA’s 3.6-liter V6 is expected to generate power, while a new 8-speed automatic transmission is anticipated to be a big change compared to the current 5-speed gearbox. Off-road enthusiasts may appreciate a new 4-cylinder diesel reportedly under consideration for launch at a later date.

Although there were rumors of plans for an aluminum frame, reports say Fiat Chrysler has settled on a steel frame with aluminum body panels to control the vehicle’s cost. The lightweight metal will likely be used in the vehicle’s hood, doors and tailgate for better fuel economy.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is slated to begin production in October. We currently anticipate an on-sale date in November.
