Handsome styling, a well-connected infotainment system, and room for up to seven passengers make the Acadia an easy family favorite. GMC’s mid-size crossover was all new for 2017 and sports a more compact body and a host of modernized features that make it leaps and bounds better than the larger, more old-school SUV it replaced. A V-6 engine is optional and provides decent hustle, while the standard four-cylinder engine is the choice for buyers mindful of fuel economy. Acadia buyers will have to choose between maximizing cargo hauling or people hauling, however, as its trimmer dimensions have encroached interior spaciousness.

Very little has changed for the Acadia for 2018, which is unsurprising since it debuted as all new for 2017. The off-road-themed All Terrain model, which uses a unique all-wheel-drive system, now can be ordered with a third row of seats. Denali models offer an automatic heated steering wheel, and all models now have a handy tire-fill alert feature that provides an audible alert to indicate the tire is full when being inflated. A new color joins the palette: Blue Steel Metallic.

What Was New For 2017?

The Acadia was new for 2017 and is more compact than its predecessor—its wheelbase, length, and width have shrunk by 6.4, 7.2, and 3.5 inches respectively. It’s lighter, too, by about 700 pounds, which helps with both efficiency and drivability. GMC modernized the blocky exterior with some softer edges; the cabin received a reworking that adds a much improved infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, somewhat improved interior materials, and classier design.

Trims and Options We’d Choose

We stand by our pick from 2017, the SLE-2 trim, and see it still as the best bang for the buck even though its price increased by $160 to $36,155. In addition to the features offered on the base SL and next-rung-up SLE-1 trims, the SLE-2 adds:

• Heated front seats
• An eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat
• Fog lamps, 18-inch wheels, remote start, and a power liftgate
• Second-row captain’s chairs

For $920, we’d also upgrade to the 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display, which adds an eight-speaker Bose sound system and a multicolored driver information center. We’d order the strong 310-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine for $1095, but we would stick with the front-wheel-drive Acadia since all-wheel drive adds $2000 to the bottom line. Our Acadia is ready for duty at $38,170.
