The 2018 Audi Q7 combines a luxurious cabin with a wide range of features and fun, sporty performance. While these qualities propel it to a high ranking in the crowded and competitive luxury midsize SUV class, the Q7’s cramped third-row and below-average predicted reliability rating may turn some shoppers away.

Pros & Cons

  • Luxurious, comfortable, and quiet cabin
  • Impressive standard and available safety features
  • Energetic, fuel-efficient engines
  • Refined ride and handling
  • Below-average cargo room
  • Cramped third row

New for 2018

  • Proximity key now standard

The Audi Q7 is a great luxury midsize SUV that’s just as impressive inside as it is under the hood. The Q7 has a polished interior, a ton of safety and technology features, potent powertrains, and lithe handling. However, it may put too much emphasis on “sport” and not enough on “utility,” as its third row and cargo space are small for the class. The Q7’s long list of family-friendly tech and ample praise from automotive journalists helped make it a finalist for our 2018 Best Luxury 3-Row SUV for Families award.

The 2019 Q7 Overview

Should I Buy the Audi Q7?

The 2018 Q7 should appeal to most shoppers searching for a luxury crossover SUV. Those looking for spirited driving will appreciate its powerful engine choices and agile handling. The Q7 is also a great choice for families, thanks to good crash test scores, loads of safety features, and more child seat anchors than most of the competition offer. In a class where many rivals start at more than $50,000, the Q7 is a relative bargain with an MSRP just under that price point.

Still, this is a very competitive segment of the market, and there are many solid alternatives to consider. The BMW X5 gives the Q7 a run for its money in overall performance, while the Volvo XC60 has an amazingly posh and elegant interior.

After the 2015 model year, Audi put the Q7 on ice for a year before introducing a redesigned model for 2017. The 2017 redesign introduced a new base six-cylinder engine that has 53 more horsepower and gets 3 more mpg than the previous generation. The 2018 model gets a new turbo-four base engine. A V6 is optional. The new base engine has about 80 fewer horsepower than the V6, but both earn the same fuel economy estimates.

The 2019 Q7 Price

The turbodiesel engine was discontinued after 2015. The 2017 and 2018 Q7s have many more features, including massaging front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, a surround-view camera, and a head-up display.

You can potentially save thousands of dollars with a used Q7, though you’ll miss out on the benefits of the vehicle’s redesign if you go back further than the 2015 model.
